Creating more sustainable products, through using more sustainable materials and intermediate processing techniques.

How is this calculated?

Level 1: Build a foundation and set ambitions

WE Fashion has a comprehensive strategy to reduce the environmental impact of its products, which centres on integrating more sustainable fibres into its collections. Responsibility and resources to deliver this strategy have been allocated and the brand reports on the progress of their strategy in their CR Report. WE Fashion maintains a Restricted Substance List (RSL) and has a process to manage supplier compliance. WE Fashion also monitors and measures the material composition of its products and has systems in place to collate chain of custody certificates to back up sustainable material claims. These foundational activities have resulted in a score of 100% at level 1.

Level 2: Make steady progress

WE Fashion has set year-on-year sustainable material targets, which include integrating more sustainable fibres into 50% of its collection by 2020. In 2017, 18.9% of WE Fashion’s collection was produced using more sustainable materials, including Better Cotton, Linen, Tencel, Organic Cotton, Recycled Cotton and Recycled Polyester. WE Fashion has a supplier portal which raises awareness of its sustainability goals and policies. WE Fashion has an opportunity to implement the use of more sustainable trims and non-textile components into their strategy. This is reflected in a score of 80% at level 2.

Level 3: Adopt best practice

WE Fashion offers knowledge building to direct suppliers through its supplier portal to encourage increased use of sustainable materials in the brand’s collections. There is room for the brand to integrate more sustainable materials into its overall collection, including trims, and to use more sustainable intermediate processing techniques. Furthermore, the brand could implement a process to increase the traceability of its products and be able to identify the suppliers of its products from direct suppliers to raw material. These activities have resulted in the level 3 score of 23%.
