Creating more sustainable products, through using more sustainable materials and intermediate processing techniques.

WE Fashion has a comprehensive strategy to reduce the environmental impact of its products, which centres on integrating more sustainable fibres into its collections. These foundational activities have resulted in a score of 94% at level 1. In 2016, 13.9% of WE Fashion’s collection was produced using more sustainable materials. WE Fashion has become a member of the Better Cotton Initiative and the Dutch Covenant, these activities are reflected in a score of 79% at level 2. The brand offers knowledge building to direct suppliers and relevant internal departments. There is room for the brand to integrate more sustainable materials into its overall collection, and to use more sustainable intermediate processing techniques, resulting is a level 3 score of 13%.

Managing labour standards and human rights in the supply chain.

WE Fashion has a comprehensive set of policies and processes to monitor labour standards within its supply chain, reflected in a level 1 score of 88%. WE Fashion has invested in internal capabilities and third-party auditing to deliver these policies, resulting in a level 2 score of 84%. In the supply chain, WE Fashion has demonstrated some best practices activities and has conducted a detailed study on human rights risks relevant to its supply chain identified. However, there remains scope to extend its activities in relation to the living wage, freedom of association and homeworkers resulting in a level 3 score of 20%.

Product Waste

Managing post-consumer textile waste through reuse, recycling and improved design.

WE Fashion has implemented activities to divert its samples and returns from landfill, by working with external partners to repurpose and recycle its waste. WE Fashion monitors amounts repurposed, recycled and landfilled by its recycling charity partners, resulting in a score of 91% at level 1. WE Fashion has implemented a clothing take back scheme across 51% of its stores. It is also a member of industry initiatives such as Circulaire Economie and plans to join the ECAP fibre to fibre recycling project in 2017. However it is yet to set long term targets to reduce its product waste impacts resulting in a score of 83% at level 2. WE Fashion has taken some initial best practice steps, by engaging consumers on product waste through its take back schemes. WE Fashion is yet to develop ongoing processes for its products to become part of a ‘closed loop’. Resulting in a score of 24% at level 3.

Communicating social and environmental impacts and activities with clarity and completeness.

WE Fashion publicly acknowledges the social and environmental impacts of its supply chain and own operations. The brand publicly shares its CoC and RSL on its website. These foundational activities have resulted in a level 1 score of 89%. Through the publication of its CSR Report, WE Fashion has set targets to manage human rights and labour standards and the environmental impact in its supply chain. There is also room for the brand to publicly disclose its CMT and vertically integrated suppliers, resulting in a level 2 score of 30%. This year WE Fashion did not submit evidence for level 3, which evaluates best practice.

Managing impacts from transporting and packaging products.

WE Fashion acknowledges its packaging and transport impacts and broadly commits to reduce them. There is opportunity for the brand to develop a formal sustainable materials packaging policy and formalise its CO2 reduction strategy, resulting in a level 1 score of 38%. WE Fashion has set targets to reduce the number of plastic bags used. These commitments have been communicated to its store staff. There is room for the brand to develop detailed targets, monitor progress and identify potential environmental reduction activities for its transportation, resulting in a score of 26% at level 2. WE Fashion engages with consumers to reduce the use of packaging. There is opportunity for the brand to invest in innovative approaches to packaging, use more sustainable product packaging and implement a pRSL, resulting in a level 3 score of 13%.

Own Operations

Managing impacts within brand owned, operated and/or controlled facilities (excluding any manufacturing facilities).

WE Fashion has formally acknowledged the impact of its own operations in relation to water and waste, and has included these in its strategy along with greenhouse gas emissions. There is also room for the brand to further review the progress it has made against its commitments; these foundational activities have resulting in a score of 58% at level 1. The brand has demonstrated that it routinely measures GHG emissions within the scope of its own operations. There is the opportunity for the brand to build on existing monitoring and measuring processes, to identify a range of potential areas for GHG reduction, and implement the appropriate activities, resulting in a level 2 score as 24%. WE Fashion has identified a small-scale waste reduction project. There is room for the brand to expand on this and identify larger scale waste and water reduction activities resulting in a level 3 score of 3%.
